You ask anybody that’s known me more ‘n a moment or two and they can tell you easy what sticks in my craw above all else. Then again...most folks that just met me could tell you just as easy. Well...now that you mention it, all you really gotta do is *look* at me to tell...

Ain’t no big secret I got a beef with the Alliance. If ire was fuel, I could thank the government, ‘cause I’d never need to spend a dime to keep Serenity flyin’, not for all the rest of my born days. Now that may seem a mite petty and superficial, but that there’s just the tiniest branch on the tippy top of the tree.

The Alliance? They’re a symbol...for everyone and everything that thinks a man ain’t fit to make his own way in the world. It’s the end all and be all of lookin’ down on folks without cause, and that’s the one thing in all the ‘verse that gets my goat. I look down on a man, it’s ‘cause I’ll do that he won’t, and things he’d do that I’d never even entertain as actual thoughts. Things that matter, like workin’ for my daily bread and dealing fair with folks. Like knowin’ when a job ain’t worth the pay, or when there’s cause to take me on a stray...even if that stray puts me in the crosshairs of the whole gorram ‘verse.

And in some particular cases, it’s also been known to include the extent of a man’s personal hygiene.

But I will never put on false airs, dealin’ man to man. I’ll never see someone as less ‘n me unless he sees the rest of mankind as less ‘n him.

And the only time I’ll ever tell a man what to do, where to go, or how to think is when I’m payin’ his salary or watchin’ his back in the field of battle.

And even if Hell opened up ‘neath our feet in that battlefield? I’d never try to make of him something that he just plain ain’t.

I'm not saying you're wrong, Mal, but isn't some form of government a very neccessary thing? Laws, rules, penalties for breaking them...otherwise you have anarchy. You have chaos. People can't grow and thrive amidst that.

Government's a necessary evil to a degree...I ain't sayin' it ain't. But it's one thing to make laws and enforce them laws, along with all that other high-handed politicatin'...it's when you try to rule the whole gorram 'verse with one gigantic iron hand that I start to get a mite techy.

Everything has to be so black and white with you sometimes. 'Neccessary evil.' Everything that doesn't fit into your view of the way of things is evil.

Would it change anything, Mal? A smaller government, a less forceful government? Would it make the universe a better place?

Because I don't think it would change a thing.

A 'verse without a government that cuts up the brains of little girls and drugs up folks to turn into things like Reavers? Leaves 'em dead for no reason?

A 'verse without a government that leaves men and women in the trenches to starve, bleed, get sick and die over the *terms of a surrender?*

Yeah...I conjure we'd all be better of without it.

And it wouldn't change a thing, because we'd merely have lopped off the head of the hydra to find another one growing in it's place. Read some of Simon's history books, if you think you can sound out the big words. Read about Earth-That-Was. You'll find that nothing has changed. Either you have one government with all the power or a cluster of small governments that squabble and go to war over everything.

Run-tse duh Fwo-tzoo, I don't know why I even try to talk to you. We can't say three sentences to each other without arguing. I give you five minutes before the word 'whore' gets tossed out again.

Way! You sure are gettin' pretty gorram fired up for what I *assume* in your high-falutin' circles ought to be considered a civilized-like discussion!

Somethin' eatin' at you, 'Nara?
